4 years of blogging

Apr 2010 marks 4 years of blogging for me. sometimes on & off, but wow, what an incredible journey it has been. even wordpress evolved so much over time
that it feels a bit intimidating to me at times with all the complex features it has now.

Thanks to all the feedback over these years. Sometimes on the comments & otherwise direct email. It has been the best part of the experience.

2 of most visited posts by a big margin are:

1) About Orkut being used for Prostitution.

this post was actually about Orkut & how it was being misused, but I received all kind of inquiries about phone numbers in almost every city in India & also solicitations, Only thing was left to have received call from Cops – so much so that I decided to hide the post from the blog.

2) Paypal opened a development center in Chennai

shows that there has been a continuous interest in Paypal & eBay, while I was with the company & even still now.

another thing I discovered over these years, that I could not have default tags or categories … Web 2.0 became obselete, crowdsourcing even though is still happening but the term disappeared, voip, not so much hot (as in being called voip), RoR one of my favorite agile technology stack seem to have not picked up as was anticipated.

Ishqiya – Movie about North east Uttar Pradesh

Watched Ishqia today. Really nice movie. Naseerudin Shan, Arshad Varsi & Vidya balan have acted really good.

It is seldom that we get to see movies about these issues (if you leave bar-girls stuff in mumbai or mumbai underworld). I can only remember Omkara in recent past touching some of these problems in eastern UP / Bihar i.e ferocious Race wars, racial armies, naxalites, complete non-existence of govt machinery including police, justice etc. Even though in this movie the two folks are able to get to a success with their technique in getting the police to the crime-scene.

If you’re not too familiar with North-east UP or UP for that matter, you may not co-relate a lot, but it is much native to that part of India. such as “Kids are taught to use firearms before they are taught to be potty trained”.

it is certainly not a typical bollywood entertainment movie. If you go with that in your mind, you might regret the decision.

Creating a bootable USB for SLAX, Ubuntu or any other Linux distro

One of my laptop’s hard disk crashed this weekend. The CD drive has been broken always so I spent a day on creating a USB drive on Ubuntu that I can boot my laptop with.

It seems there isn’t much documentation available for easily creating the USB stick bootable

Here is something that’s really easy & works without much command line interface.

It allows you to very easily create a Live linux distro on a USB. You can select almost any distro such as Ubuntu, SLAX, Fedora and dozen others.

I created SLAX and it worked fine. SLAX is one of the smallest Linux distro with all the features that a regular user would need. A very clean UI. (It takes about 2 hours to download & burn the USB on a 256 kbps line that I have at home).

Ubuntu, the most popular Linux Distro is bulky and it takes 5-6 times longer to download & burn on the USB.
